U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has characterized recent talks with Ukraine over a potential agreement to end the ongoing war with Russia as productive, while highlighting that additional efforts are needed before a resolution can be achieved.
The discussions took place in Florida, featuring a Ukrainian delegation led by Rustem Umerov, who is the newly appointed national security council secretary. The meetings were attended by prominent figures, including Donald Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, with Witkoff set to engage in further discussions in Moscow next week.
Umerov has recently stepped into the chief negotiator role following the resignation of Andriy Yermak amid an anti-corruption investigation.
This meeting is part of a series of diplomatic engagements aiming to address the ongoing conflict, which has suffered setbacks due to the recent leak of a controversial U.S. peace plan that was perceived as favoring Russian interests.
