MADISON, Wis. — A large protest unfolded at Ridglan Farms in Wisconsin as about 1,000 animal welfare activists attempted to rescue beagles from the breeding facility. The situation became tense, resulting in around 25 arrests as protesters clashed with law enforcement, who employed pepper spray and rubber bullets to maintain control.

This protest marked the second attempt by activists to liberate the beagles within a month. In March, a similar effort culminated in the successful rescue of 30 dogs but ended with 27 arrests.

During the latest demonstration, while initial chaos was reported, the sheriff's office stated that the following day saw a more peaceful assembly with approximately 200 participants dispersing after about two hours without further incident. Sheriff Kalvin Barrett acknowledged the protesters' cooperation while reiterating their right to lawful assembly.

The activists are part of the Coalition to Save the Ridglan Dogs, led by Wayne Hsiung, who faces serious charges, including conspiracy to commit burglary. Hsiung expressed in a recent statement that aiding animals should not result in severe penalties and criticized the use of excessive force against protesters.

Ridglan Farms currently holds an estimated 2,000 beagles. Although the facility has vehemently denied allegations of mistreatment, it has previously opted to relinquish its state breeding license to avoid prosecution amid claims of animal cruelty.

This escalation reflects an increasing scrutiny towards animal breeding practices and advocates pushing for animal rights, emphasizing that animals are sentient beings deserving of humane treatment.
