BLUE MOUNDS, Wis. (Deep Roots News) — A significant protest erupted at the Ridglan Farms beagle breeding and research facility on Saturday, where approximately 1,000 animal welfare activists clashed with law enforcement while attempting to rescue beagle dogs allegedly subjected to mistreatment. The protest turned chaotic as police deployed rubber bullets and pepper spray to disperse the crowd, leading to multiple arrests including the group's leader.
Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett described the situation as increasingly violent, with a portion of the protesters attempting to break through barriers including a manure-filled trench and barbed-wire fence. Despite their efforts, many of the protesters were unsuccessful in accessing the property, which houses around 2,000 beagles.
This is not a peaceful protest, Sheriff Barrett stated in a video announcement, emphasizing the risks posed by blocking emergency access routes during the escalation of events.
Activist Julie Vrzeski expressed her dismay after hours of failed attempts to seize the dogs, stating, I just feel defeated. The Coalition to Save the Ridglan Dogs group had initially planned to launch their operations on Sunday but opted to act a day early. The group has faced previous challenges, having successfully rescued 30 dogs during earlier protests.
The animal breeding facility has denied any wrongdoing in past allegations but has agreed to surrender its state breeding license effective July 1 as part of a legal settlement regarding animal mistreatment charges. Ridglan Farms maintains on its website that there is no credible evidence substantiating claims of animal abuse or neglect.
As tensions continue to rise, activists have shifted their focus, now staging protests outside the local jail in downtown Madison following the arrests made during the operation.
