In a surprising development, US President Donald Trump has announced the withdrawal of Canada's invitation to join his newly formed Board of Peace. This latest spat between the North American neighbors comes after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney made headlines at the World Economic Forum by warning of a 'rupture' in the US-led global order.
Trump's post on Truth Social conveyed the message: 'Please let this Letter serve to represent that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada's joining.' This announcement follows Carney's assertion that although Canada would not pay the proposed membership fee of $1 billion, it was prepared to join.
The Board of Peace, touted by Trump as a new international organization aimed at conflict resolution, has already faced skepticism from European leaders regarding its scope and governance. EU Chief Antonio Costa mentioned serious doubts about its intentions, yet expressed a willingness to work with the board in relation to the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
The invitation's withdrawal also reflects a broader impact of Carney's recent speech at the World Economic Forum, where he emphasized the responsibilities of 'middle powers' to unite against coercive economic practices, a statement that seemed to have displeased Trump.
Canada’s Prime Minister responded to Trump’s remarks, asserting in Quebec that 'Canada thrives because we are Canadians,' indirectly countering Trump's narrative that Canada benefits heavily from its relationship with the United States.
Trump's Board of Peace has faced criticism not only from Canada but also from other nations, including the UK and France, with concerns raised about its proposed charter and compatibility with international commitments. Currently, about 35 out of 60 invited nations have signed up, but major powers like China, Russia, and France have not committed yet.
This unfolding situation points to a significant moment in US-Canada relations and international diplomacy, highlighting the complexities and challenges of navigating geopolitical spaces amidst rising tensions.
