AUSTIN, Texas — The fallout from a devastating flood that resulted in the deaths of 27 girls at Camp Mystic is continuing as the camp's medical officer, Mary Liz Eastland, testified in court regarding her failure to report the tragic fatalities to the state health agency. Eastland, a member of the family that owns the camp, faced questioning concerning the camp's operations during the July 4 flood and the subsequent delay in evacuation procedures.

During her testimony, Eastland acknowledged not having reported the deaths to health officials, violating regulations that mandate prompt reporting of casualties at such facilities. I did not think of this requirement in the moments happening after the flood, she stated, suggesting that her focus was elsewhere in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy.

Eastland's testimony formed part of a legal dispute between camp operators and the families of the victims, who are demanding that the camp preserve evidence of the flood's destruction. The testimonies have disclosed critical circumstances surrounding the disaster, which have alerted leaders to possible negligence affecting the camp's license to operate.

According to the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), while the exact implications of the delayed report on the camp's application to reopen are unclear, the agency is currently reviewing numerous complaints against the establishment and has invited the Texas Rangers to assist with the investigation.

Families of the victims, including the family of 8-year-old Cile Steward, the only camper yet to be found, have publicly opposed any efforts to reopen Camp Mystic under the current leadership. They argue that the camp should not resume operations until investigations determine accountability regarding the flood incident.

In emotional testimonies, both Eastland, and her husband, Edward, detailed the frantic efforts to save campers as they faced rising waters that turned the area into a scene reminiscent of a natural disaster. Edward described desperately trying to rescue children amidst what he considered to be an unprecedented catastrophe.

As state regulators prepare for an on-site inspection of the camp, conversations surrounding safety measures, operational protocols, and the ethical implications of reopening have moved to the forefront. The tragic events at Camp Mystic serve as a stark reminder of the vital importance of adherence to safety regulations, ensuring that similar tragedies do not reclaim innocent lives in the future.
