Three people - including two police officers - have been killed in an explosion in Moscow, Russian authorities have reported.
Two traffic police officers spotted a suspicious individual near a police car on the city's Yeletskaya Street. Upon approaching the suspect to make an arrest, an explosive device detonated, according to Russia's Investigative Committee.
The blast resulted in the deaths of both officers and another individual standing nearby.
The explosion took place near the location where a senior Russian general was killed in a car bombing earlier the same week.
Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov died after a device planted underneath a vehicle was detonated.
Investigative Committee spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko has announced that a criminal case is being pursued in relation to an attempt on the lives of traffic police officers.
The fallen officers, identified by Russian media as Ilya Klimanov, 24, and Maxim Gorbunov, 25, were killed during the attack.
An eyewitness, Alexander, who lives nearby, recounted hearing a loud explosion, likening it to the earlier car bombing.
While Russia has indicated it suspects Ukraine's involvement in Sarvarov's death, Ukraine has not confirmed any participation in the earlier incident. The potential links between the two attacks remain unclear.
Sarvarov, aged 56, served as the head of the armed forces' operational training department and was the third military official killed in bombings in the Russian capital over the past year.
