A seven-month-old girl was shot and killed while sitting in her pushchair in broad daylight in New York City, police have reported.

Authorities believe the baby was an unintended victim of a suspected gang-related shooting.

Footage captured from the scene shows two men on a motorcycle riding against the traffic flow through Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood. A man on the back of the bike brandished a gun and fired at least two rounds, according to New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch during a news conference.

The motorcycle subsequently crashed, leading to the apprehension of the suspected shooter, while a massive manhunt is underway for the driver, Tisch stated.

“A life that had barely begun was taken in an instant,” said New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, emphasizing the urgent need to address gun violence.

Witnesses reported several adults and children on a street corner at the time of the shooting. The parents of the seven-month-old rushed to a nearby shop for cover, only to discover that their child had been shot. Witness Bernius Maldonado recounted the chaos, stating, “All the kids started ducking in the corner. The family went to the store and the mom started screaming when she noticed the baby was bleeding from her head.”

Emergency services responded quickly, and the child was transported to Woodhull Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

No other individuals were reported injured in the incident. This tragic shooting underscores the ongoing issues of gun violence in urban areas, with city officials expressing deep sorrow and frustration at such senseless acts of violence.

As of now, no one has been charged related to the shooting incident.
