SHREVEPORT, La. — A gunman in Louisiana killed eight children in tragic shootings at two homes early Sunday, shocking the community.

This incident is documented as the nation’s deadliest mass shooting in over two years.

This is an unprecedented scene within our community, stated Chris Bordelon, spokesperson for the Shreveport Police Department.

The young victims, aged between one and approximately fourteen, included several who were relatives of the suspect. Overall, a total of ten individuals suffered gunshot wounds.

Following the shootings, the suspected gunman met his end after a pursuit by law enforcement, during which officers engaged him. He fled by commandeering a vehicle and was tracked by police.

Authorities withheld the suspect's name but confirmed he was an adult male. They continue to gather information from multiple crime scenes in the area, including two homes and a third location.

This tragic incident surpasses the previous deadliest shooting in the U.S. this year, where eight people were killed in a Chicago suburb in January 2024, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today.

The community remains in shock, with officials requesting patience and prayers as they navigate this devastating ordeal. Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith expressed his disbelief: I can't find the words; my heart is heavy for what happened today.

This is the worst possible situation that many of us have ever faced, added Tom Arceneaux, Mayor of Shreveport, indicating the collective anguish felt citywide.

Louisiana State Police are actively involved in the investigation, alongside local authorities, and have stated that no officers were injured during the series of events connected to the shooting.

Governor Jeff Landry expressed his heartbreak over the incident and extended gratitude to first responders working at the scene.
