ATLANTA (AP) — Olaolukitan Adon Abel, a 26-year-old former U.S. Navy serviceman from the UK, has been charged with a series of deadly attacks in the suburbs of Atlanta. These incidents drew significant attention from national leaders, including the President's administration.
Abel is accused of killing two women, one of whom was a Department of Homeland Security worker, and critically injuring another man. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin referred to these shootings as acts of pure evil and expressed concern regarding Abel's acquisition of U.S. citizenship in 2022, during President Biden's administration.
Details of the Attacks
The horrific events occurred in Decatur, Brookhaven, and Panthersville early on a Monday morning. The first victim, Prianna Weathers, 31, was found with gunshot wounds near a restaurant and later died in the hospital. About an hour later, a homeless man was shot multiple times while he was sleeping outside a grocery store. He remains in critical condition.
Investigators linked the attacks together, suggesting that at least one victim was targeted randomly.
Remembering Lauren Bullis
The DHS worker, Lauren Bullis, who was discovered deceased in Panthersville, was remembered as a dedicated and generous employee who brought warmth to her colleagues. Bullis, who also enjoyed running and traveling, had a profound impact on those around her.
Her family shared that her caring nature touched everyone who knew her, and her death adds to the growing list of victims of gun violence in the U.S.
Criminal Background of the Suspect
Abel, who enlisted in the Navy in 2020, has a somewhat troubled past with prior criminal offenses, including an assault on police officers while stationed in California. His history raises questions about the citizenship process, particularly for individuals with previous violent convictions, as U.S. policies often bar such individuals from obtaining citizenship.
The case highlights the ongoing discussions surrounding immigration policies and public safety, reminding communities of the risks posed by gun violence.
