In a heartbreaking event, nine people have lost their lives in a mass shooting that transpired in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have reported that the tragic incident occurred at a local school and a nearby residence, leaving another 25 individuals injured. The assailant's body was also found at the scene.
This shooting stands as one of the deadliest in Canada's history, a somber milestone that has sent shockwaves through this close-knit community of approximately 2,400 residents.
The attack began with a call received by the RCMP reporting an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School shortly after 1:20 PM local time. Police officers quickly responded, issuing an alert and asking locals to shelter in place as a safety precaution.
Efforts to secure the area included a lockdown at both Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and Tumbler Ridge Elementary School, ensuring the safety of students and staff until officers arrived on-site within two minutes of the initial report. Public Safety Minister Nina Krieger expressed that this rapid response was crucial in preventing further loss of life.
All six other victims, alongside the suspected shooter, were later discovered within the school premises, with additional victims found at a nearby home. Emergency medical personnel were dispatched, airlifting at least two individuals with severe injuries to a hospital.
As investigations unfold, the community is left mourning the profound loss while seeking closure about the shooter’s motives and any potential ties to the school. Local officials, including Mayor Darryl Krakowka, reflected on the tragedy and its impact on their tightly knit community, where many residents feel as though they have lost family members.
