Surveillance Footage Reveals Alleged Shooter’s Rooftop Escape

During the second day of a preliminary hearing in Utah, prosecutors displayed new security footage that they say shows the man accused of fatally shooting protest leader Charlie Kirk—identified as Tyler Robinson—running across the rooftop of the university’s Losee Building. The clip, used by the court on Tuesday, depicts the suspect leaping from the roof with an object in hand and then retreating from campus.

Robinson, 23, faces aggravated murder charges for the September 10 shooting on the Utah Valley University (UVU) campus. He has not yet entered a plea, and his lawyers have repeatedly objected to the use of the footage on grounds of editing and lack of testimony from the original camera operators.

The prosecution, led by State Bureau of Investigation investigator David Hull, presents the footage as evidence that Robinson entered campus, walked across grounds, and ultimately sought a position on the roof before the fatal shot. Hull also noted that a rifle was later recovered in the wooded area surrounding the university, potentially linking the suspect to the weapon used.

Defence counsel Kathy Nester argues that the video is insufficiently reliable, citing discrepancies such as differing clothing and descriptions of a better‑looking suspect by other witnesses. She has also raised concerns that the footage excludes critical context, such as the presence of other firearms on campus that night, which could shift the narrative around motive and intent.

Judge Graf, who oversees the preliminary hearing, will not rule on guilt but will determine whether enough evidence exists to move the case to trial. The prosecution is pursuing the death penalty—a position under scrutiny because of its retrospective application in modern legal contexts.

The case, tightly interwoven with political activism and regional tensions, highlights the larger societal debate over how technology, narrative framing, and the legal system intersect.
