In brief
Tesla's profit plummeted sharply in 2024 due to fierce competition from global rivals, despite minor increases in sales. The company's reliance on limited vehicle models and necessary price reductions for sales have impacted overall profitability.
Tesla, the renowned electric vehicle manufacturer led by Elon Musk, announced a drastic reduction in profit for 2024 as it faces fierce competition within the electric car market from rivals based in China, Europe, and the United States. The company reported a profit of $2.3 billion during the final quarter of 2024, a considerable decline compared to $7.9 billion in the same period the previous year. However, the prior year’s profit had included a significant one-time tax benefit of $5.9 billion, adjusting for this, Tesla's operating profit slipped by 23% in the last quarter.Total sales for the fourth quarter increased by 2% to $25.7 billion, up from $25.2 billion the previous year. When looking at the full year, Tesla's profits dropped to $7.1 billion from $15 billion in 2023, while annual sales inched up to $97.7 billion compared to $96.8 billion. While Tesla continues to sell energy storage solutions, including batteries for electric utilities and homes, its lackluster car sales have been a concern. The firm remains heavily dependent on two main models, the Model 3 sedan and the Model Y SUV, while competitors are rapidly expanding their electric vehicle offerings, presenting greater challenges in retaining market share.
