In brief

In April 1974, her gift of red carnations to soldiers marked a pivotal moment in Portuguese history.

In a poignant reminder of the power of simple acts, Celeste Caeiro, the woman whose flower-giving sparked the Carnation Revolution, passed away on November 17, 2024, in Lisbon. Known affectionately as “the Lady of the Carnations,” her spontaneous gesture on April 25, 1974, became a symbol of the peaceful uprising that overthrew a 40-year dictatorship in Portugal. She was 91.Her granddaughter, Carolina Caeiro Fontela, shared the news of her passing due to longstanding heart and lung issues with the national news agency Lusa. At the time of the revolution, Caeiro was a single mother and a cloakroom attendant at a Lisbon restaurant called Sir, where she had arrived that fateful morning anticipating a busy day celebrating the restaurant’s anniversary with red and white flowers adorning every table. However, her boss, who had been secretly listening to a rebellious radio station, informed her that the restaurant would close due to significant events unfolding in the city, advising her to take the blooms home. On her way, she encountered a procession of military vehicles and soldiers—who were part of a coup led by the Armed Forces Movement aimed at deposing the dictatorial regime of Prime Minister Marcelo Caetano.Caeiro witnessed citizens emerge from their homes waving flags and welcoming the soldier's arrival, eager for change and an end to the suffering inflicted by ongoing wars against independence movements in Africa. Families had borne the brunt of these conflicts, losing loved ones and struggling economically as a result. The revolutionary act of handing flowers to soldiers, which Caeiro initiated, evolved into an enduring emblem of both resilience and hope, forever marking her name in a time of historical transformation.
