In brief
Recent antisemitic attacks in Amsterdam linked to a soccer match between Israeli and Dutch teams have led to the arrest of four individuals. The situation escalated into physical and verbal violence, prompting police intervention and ongoing investigations.
The police in Amsterdam arrested four suspects on Saturday as part of an investigation into antisemitic attacks directed at Israeli soccer fans earlier this week. The violence erupted following a match between Dutch team Ajax and Israeli team Maccabi Tel Aviv on Thursday and Friday. Initially, the police detained 62 people during the turmoil, although most were later released.Videos captured the agitation surrounding the event, with some Israeli fans chanting anti-Arab slogans while being escorted by police from the central train station. The chants included provocative lines, illustrating the deep divisions heightened by the ongoing crisis in Gaza. Riot police were mobilized to separate pro-Palestinian activists from the Israeli fans at the stadium.According to Marijke Stor, a police spokeswoman, while four individuals are still in custody on charges of public violence, additional arrests may be pending as the investigation continues. Authorities had already identified one of the arrested suspects, a 26-year-old, using CCTV footage from the event. Stor clarified that the release of individuals previously detained does not exempt them from being suspects in this case. The authorities have yet to file charges against any of the individuals involved, as efforts to manage the situation and ensure public safety persist.
