Romania is experiencing a political storm following revelations of a sophisticated campaign to influence upcoming presidential elections via social media and cyberwarfare. Recent intelligence assessments suggest that efforts were coordinated by state-sponsored actors, likely from Russia, aimed at propelling the candidacy of Calin Georgescu, a far-right, NATO-skeptic figure who received significant support on the platform TikTok.

Georgescu emerged as a surprise front-runner in the first round of voting, leading to scrutiny over the legitimacy of his rapid ascent. Romanian intelligence has indicated that a highly organized campaign facilitated by influencers led to the dissemination of identical messaging and large financial investments in promoting Georgescu’s campaign—amounting to $381,000 in a single month through undisclosed TikTok accounts that violated both platform and electoral laws by failing to properly label sponsored content.

Georgescu has consistently claimed he spent nothing on promotion and was unaware of the influencers involved, stating that the release of intelligence documents represents a coordinated attempt to undermine his candidacy. In an unusual disclosure, the documents also revealed a considerable number of attempted cyber intrusions, with approximately 85,000 hacks aimed at accessing electoral data, which were believed to have been orchestrated to disrupt the election process.

With just days to go before the second round of voting featuring Georgescu and reformist candidate Elena Lasconi, turmoil continues within Romanian politics. Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, who finished third in the elections, has expressed his endorsement for Lasconi and emphasizes the need for accountability among those responsible for the interference.

As tensions rise, a pro-European Union protest is scheduled, with Georgescu advising supporters to maintain peace and social stability, citing fears of civil unrest reminiscent of Ukraine's Maidan revolution in 2014. Meanwhile, the prosecutor’s office has taken the initiative to scrutinize the validity of the newly released intelligence documents, highlighting the importance of fair and transparent electoral processes in Romania's pursuit of democratic integrity.
