In brief

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) accuses Israeli military forces of deliberately attacking its headquarters in Khan Younis, resulting in one death and several injuries. As the humanitarian crisis in Gaza escalates, calls for accountability and protections for aid workers grow louder.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has condemned what it describes as a "deliberate" attack on its headquarters in Khan Younis, Gaza, by Israeli military forces, which resulted in the death of one worker and injuries to three others. According to the PRCS, the early morning strike on Sunday caused a significant fire within the building and occurred despite its premises being clearly marked with the organization's protective emblem, recognized by the Israeli military.PRCS released images showcasing extensive damage to the facility, alongside a video that exhibited the scene during and after the attack, which included flames and smoke. The organization asserted that the artillery strike hit the upper floors first, followed by subsequent shelling on the second and ground floors while rescue operations were underway.Omar Isleem, the deceased worker, is mourned by the PRCS, which reiterated its ongoing concern over attacks on humanitarian personnel. The organization noted that since the onset of the recent war, at least 51 of its staff and volunteers have lost their lives in Gaza, including 29 while performing humanitarian duties. "This was not a mistake," insisted the PRCS, calling for accountability and protections for all medical and humanitarian workers. The United Nations Human Rights office voiced its "deep shock and outrage" over the continued targeting of emergency workers, demanding an independent investigation into the attack. This incident unfolds amid escalating violence in Gaza, with the Hamas-run health ministry reporting at least 104 additional fatalities due to Israeli military actions in the preceding 24 hours. Reports also indicated a broader humanitarian crisis, with a large number of casualties among those seeking aid, highlighting a dire need for increased assistance. The International Defense Forces (IDF) issued a statement indicating they were assessing the claim regarding PRCS's building damage and asserted that their operations are not aimed at civilians. As the humanitarian situation in Gaza deteriorates, medical facilities face severe shortages, compounded by continued blockades. The Hamas-run health ministry reported a troubling rise in deaths linked to malnutrition, with humanitarian agencies demanding enhanced access for aid provision to prevent further catastrophe. In response to increasing human suffering, Israel cited its recent cooperation with international partners to deliver essential aid, although humanitarian groups maintain that more needs to be done to address widespread famine and malnutrition in the region, a crisis that continues to grow more severe.
