In brief
Ukraine has taken significant steps towards tapping into its lithium reserves, crucial for battery production, under a deal with the United States. This move aims to solidify its partnership with Washington while raising concerns about economic sovereignty.
As Ukraine continues to navigate its complex relationship with the United States, it has now approved initial steps toward mining a substantial lithium deposit, marking a defining moment under its landmark minerals agreement with Washington. This strategic decision represents an endeavor by Kyiv to exhibit its capacity to execute the arrangement, forged with the Trump administration a month prior. On June 16, 2025, it was reported that the Ukrainian government had consented to draft recommendations for potential private investors to commence operations at the Dobra lithium field, one of its largest reserves, located in central Ukraine. This will be the first project greenlit under the recent deal, reflecting Ukraine’s intent to harness its rich mineral resources amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.Key investors expressing interest in the Dobra lithium deposit include a consortium featuring TechMet, an energy investment company with U.S. government ties, along with prominent billionaire Ronald S. Lauder, a close associate of former President Trump. This consortium has been vocal about its eagerness to commence bidding, having made appeals to President Volodymyr Zelensky in late 2023.Under this transformative agreement, Ukraine would allocate half of the revenues generated from mineral extraction to a joint investment fund with the U.S., a practice that critics argue could compromise national economic interests. As part of the arrangement, the U.S. would also receive a share, which has been portrayed by Trump as a form of repayment for past American aid given to Ukraine amidst its struggles. The process of drafting additional guidelines for opening the bidding is anticipated to unfold over the coming weeks. However, it remains uncertain whether the Ukrainian government will ultimately proceed with allowing the bidding process to move forward. At present, there has been no official commentary regarding this development from government sources in Ukraine.
