Explosion at Viacha Military Barracks
A blast at an artillery regiment base in the town of Viacha, about 30km south of La Paz, killed at least two people and wounded more than 80.
Defence Minister Ernesto Justiniano said the explosion was caused by pyrotechnic material stored at the barracks.
Authorities said seven people are still missing and warned residents to stay 150 metres from the base due to the risk of a further detonation.
Health officials estimate 10 to 15 deaths, though the official count is lower, and the municipality declared three days of mourning.
President Rodrigo Paz expressed solidarity with the victims’ families and pledged a thorough investigation.
Police spokesperson Roger Roca noted fireworks had been stored at the site and that the cause is still under investigation.
A search for survivors has been underway in the rubble outside the barracks.
