Washington—The tragic shooting of Renee Good, a mother of three, by a federal immigration agent in Minneapolis has left her family and community reeling. On the day of her death, Renee and her wife, Rebecca Good, had stopped to support their neighbors, a decision that would lead to a devastating turn of events.
Rebecca reflected on her wife’s legacy in a heartfelt statement provided to Minnesota Public Radio. She described Renee, who was killed at the age of 37, as someone who embodied kindness and compassion. We had whistles. They had guns, she expressed, highlighting the stark contrast between the peaceful intentions of the couple and the violent actions of law enforcement.
The incident occurred on a snowy street near their home when three Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers confronted Renee while she was in her SUV. Eyewitnesses captured video of the confrontation, which escalated quickly when an officer pulled out his weapon and fired at the vehicle as it moved forward.
Federal officials have wrongfully labeled Renee as a domestic terrorist, claiming she attempted to run over an officer, a characterization that local officials and protesters have fiercely contested. Rebecca's statement focused not on the circumstances of the shooting, but rather on honoring the spirit of her wife, a woman described as one who literally sparkled with joy.
The couple, who had only recently moved to Minneapolis, were raising Renee’s 6-year-old son from a previous marriage. Rebecca noted that Renee was deeply spiritual, advocating for love and safety among all people, regardless of background. All religions teach the same essential truth: we are here to love each other, care for each other, and keep each other safe and whole,” she wrote. Rebecca expressed gratitude towards those who showed support during this harrowing time, thanking individuals across the country and beyond.
Renee’s charming and vibrant personality shone through in her social media presence, where she identified herself as a poet and writer, sharing glimpses of her life and interests. Friends and family remember her as a source of light who inspired those around her.
The couple had found a sense of community in Minneapolis, affirming the belief that all individuals deserve compassion and kindness, irrespective of their backgrounds. Now, Rebecca faces the daunting task of raising their son alone, determined to teach him the values that she and Renee cherished. “There are people building a better world for him,” Rebecca wrote, emphasizing the need for love and understanding in a time of fear and anger.
