The tragic events unfolded on Wednesday evening when gunfire erupted at around 17:30 local time, leading to a chaotic scene where several people were shot, including family members of the assailant and the restaurant owner. Interior Minister Danilo Saranovic described the incident as stemming from "disturbed interpersonal relations," and indicated that the assailant was heavily intoxicated prior to the assault. Four victims sustained serious injuries and required hospitalization.

In the wake of the tragedy, authorities launched an extensive manhunt for Martinović, who ultimately fatally injured himself as he was cornered by police and refused to surrender. The national security council is expected to urgently evaluate measures to enhance public safety, which may include banning civilian firearm possession. Mass shootings are rare in Montenegro, making this event particularly shocking.

The Prime Minister conveyed his condolences on social media, declaring the act “senseless” and emphasizing the collective grief felt across the nation as Montenegro comes to terms with this heartbreak.
