DETROIT (AP) — In a shocking act of violence, Ayman Ghazali crashed his pickup truck into the Temple Israel synagogue, located in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan. According to the FBI, the attack was inspired by the militant group Hezbollah, linking it to broader concerns about extremist ideologies targeting religious communities.
Before the March 12 assault, Ghazali recorded a video expressing his desire to 'kill as many of them as I possibly can,' according to Jennifer Runyan, head of the FBI in Detroit. For hours, he sat in the parking lot of the synagogue before smashing through closed doors and into a hallway where early childhood education takes place. This unfortunate incident struck a security guard, leading to an exchange of gunfire before Ghazali took his own life.
Fortunately, first responders were able to evacuate the building promptly, ensuring that none of the 150 children and staff members present were injured. The scene unfolded amid tensions escalating in the Middle East, particularly due to recent Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon that claimed the life of Ghazali’s brother, stated to be a commander in Hezbollah, stirring a tragic personal motivation for the attack.
Ghazali's ex-wife alerted police about his distress and suicidal thoughts, giving insight into the personal turmoil he experienced after the loss of multiple family members in the ongoing conflict. National intelligence director Tulsi Gabbard mentioned Ghazali’s familial ties to Hezbollah, further complicating the narrative of his motivations.
