NEW ORLEANS, La. — Ahead of New Year’s celebrations, the Louisiana National Guard is set to deploy 350 members as a part of a larger effort to enhance security in New Orleans. This added measure comes in the wake of a tragic event last year when a vehicle attack on Bourbon Street resulted in 14 fatalities.

The deployment, authorized by President Trump, follows similar National Guard missions previously conducted in major cities. New Orleans' police spokespeople emphasize that the troops are present primarily for visibility and to ensure the safety of locals and tourists.

Lt. Col. Noel Collins from the National Guard stated that this initiative will support local and federal law enforcement in efforts to maintain safety during the busy Carnival season, stretching until Mardi Gras. Participating troops will focus on patrolling the well-known tourist areas while not engaging in immigration enforcement.

This year's security measures involve over 800 local and federal law enforcement officials who will manage traffic and conduct checks to maintain public order. Officials are taking precautions after the vehicle-ramming incident last January, which raised significant concerns over security during large gatherings.

The increased presence of the National Guard and law enforcement aims to provide peace of mind to those partaking in the festivities during a historically vibrant season in the city. Last year’s attack, involving a former military member who claimed allegiance to extremist groups, serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers during large public celebrations.
