Cesar Chavez, a prominent US civil rights leader known for his dedication to farm workers' rights, is now facing allegations of sexual abuse from fellow activists. Dolores Huerta, who co-founded the United Farm Workers (UFW) with Chavez, claims that he once 'manipulated and pressured' her into sex and forced her on another occasion.
The accusations have gained traction following a New York Times investigation detailing similar allegations from Huerta and two other women, who assert that Chavez groomed and sexually abused girls within the labor movement during the 1960s and 1970s.
In response to these troubling reports, Chavez's family expressed their devastation and praised the courage of the women coming forward. The accusations have cast a shadow over Chavez's legacy, with the UFW announcing the cancellation of its participation in celebrations for Cesar Chavez Day, scheduled for March 31.
Huerta, now 95, revealed that her encounters with Chavez led to pregnancies, which she kept secret for decades, as her dedication to labor rights was her primary focus. Meanwhile, Ana Murguia and Debra Rojas have also recounted years of abuse by Chavez during their adolescent years.
Following the surfacing of these allegations, multiple events commemorating Chavez's contributions have been re-evaluated, and even the California Governor has suggested a potential renaming of the holiday.
Chavez, who passed away in 1993 at the age of 66, was instrumental in pushing forward the rights and working conditions of California's farm workers. However, the gravity of the allegations against him has prompted calls for accountability from leaders, including LULAC and California officials, reflecting a broader discussion about women's rights and the protection of those vulnerable within movements.
While the UFW stated they had not received direct reports regarding the allegations, Governor Gavin Newsom emphasized that the farm workers movement is larger than any individual, and urged continued support for those affected.
In light of the accusations, the Cesar Chavez Foundation has acknowledged the disturbing allegations and reaffirmed its commitment to support victims and respond to the ongoing revelations.
