In brief

A small plane crash in Bolivia left five survivors stranded for over 36 hours in an alligator-infested swamp but, thanks to local fishermen and emergency responders, all were rescued unharmed.

The small aircraft, which plummeted after experiencing engine failure, was discovered by local fishermen after being missing for nearly two days in the Amazonas region. The incident unfolded as a flight from Baures, Northern Bolivia, was making its way to Trinidad. After losing altitude reportedly due to engine complications, the pilot, 29-year-old Andres Velarde, executed an emergency landing on a swampy area near the Itanomas River. The five occupants, which included three women and a child, clung to the submerged plane while waiting for rescue, encountering alligators that circled the craft during the night. Despite the dire circumstances, they managed to keep themselves safe—Velarde speculated that leaking fuel from the aircraft acted as a deterrent against predators. Additionally, the group spotted an anaconda in the murky waters while they camped out on top of the plane. For sustenance, the survivors relied on cassava flour brought by one of the passengers, as resources were limited and the fear of alligators prevented them from venturing for fresh water. “We couldn't drink water and we couldn't go anywhere else because of the alligators,” Velarde recounted. After two days of searching in vain, the submerged plane was finally sighted by fishermen who alerted authorities, leading to the deployment of a helicopter to transport the survivors to safety. Ruben Torres, head of the Beni Region Health Department, expressed his relief and satisfaction regarding collective efforts from various institutions that contributed to the successful rescue, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in critical situations.
