JASPER, Ga. (AP) — A shooting incident at a Department of Veterans Affairs clinic in Jasper, Georgia, has left one person injured and in need of hospitalization. Police responded to the incident on Tuesday afternoon around 1:30 p.m. Officers confronted a suspect, who was also shot during the encounter.
The Pickens County VA clinic, which offers primary care, specialty health services, and mental health care, was the scene of increased police activity. Emergency responders, including several law enforcement officers in tactical gear, were visible near the clinic located in a local strip mall.
Despite multiple attempts to reach the clinic for comment, no one answered the phone as of Tuesday afternoon. The clinic opened its doors in the summer of 2020, aiming to improve healthcare access for veterans in the area.
This incident raises urgent questions about safety in healthcare settings, particularly those providing services to veterans. Jasper, a serene town about 60 miles north of Atlanta and the first mountain city in Georgia, is now grappling with the aftermath of this violent event.
