A 17‑year‑old Thai girl, Tunchanok Donhomla, died from suffocation, police officials announced, after her naked body was found inside a suitcase by a railway track in Pattaya.
The body was discovered less than 15 minutes after Pattaya police arrested 45‑year‑old Australian national Simon Peter Carman, whom they said was attempting to flee the country.
Autopsy Results
Police chief Anek Srathongyoo stated the autopsy revealed death by suffocation, with brain injury present but not contributing to the fatality. He added that DNA from Carman matched the body, indicating it likely came from handling the suitcase.
Authorities are pressing four charges against Carman: murder, concealment or relocation of a corpse, kidnapping a minor aged 15 to 18, and taking a minor for an indecent act.
Carman’s initial statements did not fully deny the accusations; he admitted to taking the girl out but later denied the murder charges and claimed he acted in self‑defence.
Police prosecutors plan to submit the case by Friday, with an indictment deadline set for 18 September.
CCTV Footage
Earlier surveillance showed Carman entering a condo with Tunchanok at 03:34 local time on 25 June; later that night he left alone “carrying a large suitcase”.
In custody, Carman recorded a video to the victim’s family indicating remorse, urging women to stay cautious and calling the incident "out of my control".
Tunchanok, who went by the nickname Cake, had left her hometown in Kalasin with a friend to holiday in Pattaya on 16 June. She had no living mother, and her father, Thongchai Donhomla, expressed devastation and sorrow at his daughter's death.
If convicted, Carman could face the death penalty under Thai law for the murder charge.
