The Russian Investigations Committee has announced the identification of three suspects involved in the shooting of high-profile military figure Lt Gen Vladimir Alexeyev. This includes Lyubomir Korba, a Ukrainian-born Russian citizen, who is accused of carrying out the attack.

According to reports, Korba arrived in Moscow in late December on a mission allegedly directed by Ukrainian intelligence services to execute a terrorist attack, although Kyiv has refuted these claims. Alexeyev, 64, underwent surgery after the shooting incident at a residential complex in north-western Moscow and has reportedly regained consciousness.

Spokeswoman Svetlana Petrenko detailed that the assailant fired three shots before fleeing and subsequently traveled to the United Arab Emirates, where he was arrested and extradited back to Russia. Forensic teams found the murder weapon—a Makarov pistol—with a silencer and ammunition at the crime scene.

As the situation unfolds, Alexeyev's role as the second-in-command of the GRU, Russia's military intelligence, highlights the escalating risks faced by senior military figures amidst ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine. The Kremlin has taken a firm stance, with Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov indicating that President Vladimir Putin expressed gratitude to the UAE's leadership for their assistance in detaining the suspect.

Both countries have accused each other of targeted attacks, with Ukraine suggesting the shooting may stem from internal Russian conflicts. Further investigations are underway as authorities work to understand the motives behind this high-profile shooting.
