The US has intercepted an Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf as part of its naval blockade, Donald Trump has announced. The president wrote on his Truth Social platform that the Touska was seized after failing to respond to a warning to stop. Iran has not yet commented on the incident.

This announcement followed the White House's confirmation that US Vice-President JD Vance would lead a delegation for a second round of talks aimed at ending the war with Iran in Pakistan. Tehran has not confirmed its attendance, with state media reporting that officials will not participate while the US blockade remains in place.

Trump detailed that the ship, nearly 900 feet long and comparable to an aircraft carrier, attempted to bypass the naval blockade. He stated that warning shots were ignored, leading to the ship being stopped after a shot was fired into its engine room. He emphasized that the ship was under US Treasury sanctions because of its illegal activities and confirmed that the US had full control of the vessel.

Amidst these tensions, the US Central Command released video footage purportedly showing the naval interception. Trump reiterated that the blockade would remain until an agreement between the two nations was reached.

Previous talks had ended without an agreement, with key issues such as Iran's nuclear program and the control of the Strait of Hormuz being major points of contention. Reports indicate that the strait remains closed due to the blockade, significantly affecting global oil transport, considering it is a major route for oil and liquefied natural gas.

Furthermore, incidents involving attacks on various ships have also been reported, with the French shipping company CMA CGM confirming its vessel was fired upon. Meanwhile, Trump has publicly threatened severe repercussions against Iran if no deal is achieved.
