Disaster response crews quickly commenced operations, utilizing GPS technology, sniffer dogs, and thermal imaging to locate survivors amidst treacherous conditions caused by ongoing snowfall and rain.
The workers, who are part of the Border Roads Organization responsible for infrastructure development in India’s border regions, were transported via helicopter to medical facilities in nearby Joshimath. Many of those rescued are reported to be in critical condition.
Mana, located at an altitude of 3,200 meters (over 10,000 feet) and approximately 15 miles from the Tibetan border, is known for its harsh winters, prompting its residents to migrate to lower regions during this time year.
Uttarakhand's vulnerability to natural calamities, including avalanches and floods, is well-documented. The region experienced one of its most devastating disasters in 2013, when flooding resulted in over 1,000 casualties, while a subsequent avalanche in 2021 claimed the lives of 11 individuals connected to a Border Roads Organization camp.
As authorities continue to respond to the crisis, India’s Meteorological Department has issued warnings about the likelihood of further avalanches in the area, necessitating vigilance for the safety of both workers and residents.
