Just Stop Oil, the prominent British climate activist organization renowned for its eye-catching protests, announced a cessation of its dramatic actions, including infamous incidents of throwing soup at priceless artworks. Following their declared triumph in halting new oil and gas licenses in the United Kingdom, the group stated they would cease such tactics after one last protest scheduled for next month in London. “We achieved what we set out to achieve,” declared James Skeet, spokesperson for Just Stop Oil.

The group first garnered significant attention in 2022 through a series of controversial protests, such as throwing tomato soup at Vincent van Gogh’s "Sunflowers" and gluing themselves to the frames of famous paintings by John Constable and Diego Velázquez. The activists claimed these demonstrations were aimed at highlighting the immediacy of the climate crisis and the urgent need for societal and political change. Notably, Just Stop Oil emphasized that their actions were carried out with the intent to avoid damaging the artworks, as all pieces were invested in protective glass.

However, critics voiced concerns about potential harm to the historical frames of these pieces, indicating a complex interaction between protest and cultural preservation. As the organization prepares to devise its next steps, their focus appears to shift towards different forms of activism, eager to continue raising awareness about the climate emergency and pushing for long-term environmental responsibility.
