Alec Baldwin has made a notable return to Saturday Night Live (SNL) amid his recent legal battles that stemmed from the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during filming in 2021. Baldwin, who has been a key figure in sketch comedy with a record 17 hosting appearances, stepped back into the spotlight for the show's latest episode.
During his return, he performed as Fox News host Bret Baier in a humorous sketch where he parodied his recent interview with Democratic presidential contender Kamala Harris, portrayed by Maya Rudolph. The segment poked fun at the contentious nature of their exchange, with Baldwin's character jokingly claiming he couldn’t hear Harris's responses, thus highlighting the interruptions that came during their real-life discussion.
The controversy surrounding Baldwin has been intense following the accidental shooting that led to Hutchins’ death. Baldwin has consistently denied pulling the trigger and described the incident as a "one in a trillion episode." His involuntary manslaughter charges were dismissed earlier in the year after a judge found that crucial evidence had not been shared with his defense team, leading to significant judicial implications.
Adding to the case's grim backdrop, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the film’s armourer, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in connection to the incident, due to her failure to manage the mixing of live and dummy ammunition on set.
With his charges resolved, Baldwin's return to SNL serves not only as a hopeful sign for his career but also as a moment for lighter comedic relief following a turbulent chapter in his life.
