In brief
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in a significant escalation of hostilities, marked by a new wave of air strikes and ground operations in Gaza, leading to vast human suffering and a deteriorating humanitarian situation.
Israel has intensified its military actions in Gaza, following a series of air strikes that, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, have claimed the lives of over 430 people within just two days. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported launching “targeted ground activities” in the Netzarim Corridor, an area that separates northern and southern Gaza. This uptick in military actions signals the end of a fragile ceasefire that had been in effect since January.Earlier, the United Nations confirmed the deaths of two individuals, including a UN staff member, due to an explosion at a compound in Deir al-Balah. Although a foreign ministry spokesman stated that an investigation will take place, they denied any responsibility on Israel’s part. The IDF indicated that it is establishing a "partial buffer" zone between the north and south of Gaza, prompting evacuation orders in Beit Hanoun and surrounding regions. These orders have incited significant panic among Palestinian communities, who have endured consecutive displacements throughout the ongoing war.In a video address, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz delivered a "last warning" to the Palestinian territory, urging the return of hostages believed to be held by Hamas. Israel claims that 59 hostages are still in captivity, with 24 reportedly alive. Katz reiterated Israel's commitment to eradicating Hamas, warning of "total destruction and devastation" if their conditions remain unmet. This escalation follows a UN report indicating an explosive ordinance struck a UN compound in Gaza. The UNOPS leader, Jorge Moreira da Silva, asserted that the incident was likely intentional, as the humanitarian crisis deepens. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for a thorough investigation into the aftermath. On the frontline, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared a resumption of full military operations, emphasizing that ceasefire negotiations will now occur amidst continued fighting. The air strikes are reported to be the most intense since an earlier ceasefire and hostage exchange agreement that began on January 19. Negotiations have stalled, with Hamas unwilling to discuss ceasing hostilities on Israel's proposed terms, despite having indicated potential releases of hostages.Israel had previously halted the entry of essential supplies into Gaza beginning in early March as a tactic to exert pressure on Hamas. Now, the IDF appears prepared to employ ground forces to facilitate an agreement with Hamas and the United States. Since the onset of conflict on October 7, 2023, following a Hamas attack resulting in approximately 1,200 Israeli casualties and the capture of 251 hostages, Israel has conducted a substantial military offensive, which has resulted in over 48,500 Palestinian fatalities alongside extensive destruction of homes and infrastructure.
