Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly criticized US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner for their perceived neglect of Ukraine, declaring their visits to Moscow without an official stop in Kyiv as 'disrespectful.'
In a recent interview, Zelensky highlighted that Witkoff, who has met with Russian President Vladimir Putin multiple times, has made eight trips to Moscow but has never taken the same initiative to visit Ukraine. 'It's disrespectful [for them] to come to Moscow and not Kyiv, it's just disrespectful,' he stated during the conversation.
The two envoys were in Moscow late last year as ceasefire discussions grew more urgent in the context of the prolonged war in Ukraine. Despite indications that their visit may have included plans to come to Kyiv, this trip has yet to occur amid shifting geopolitical focuses, particularly the US's engagements in the Middle East.
Zelensky expressed understanding of the complex logistics involved but reiterated the importance of maintaining open lines of communication. 'If they don't want to, we can meet in other countries,' he commented, acknowledging the US's current attention was diverted, primarily due to escalating tensions between the US and Iran.
In the broader context, the lack of direct communication between the US and Ukraine could impact the ongoing ceasefire negotiations which have gained momentum in recent months. The talks, initially gaining traction in late 2025, have faced challenges over Ukraine's demands, particularly regarding the return of forcibly deported Ukrainian children and territorial integrity concerns.
As the war continues to rage, with significant areas of eastern Ukraine under Russian control, both Ukraine and its allies remain committed to securing a favorable outcome to end the conflict that has drastically reshaped their nation over the past four years. The latest developments underline the necessity for greater collaboration and attention to Ukraine's needs in international diplomacy.
