RTÉ has stated it will not participate in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest if Israel is included, emphasizing the appalling loss of lives in Gaza as a primary concern.
The broadcaster has a history of success at Eurovision, having won seven times. Yet, RTÉ's commitment to the event hangs in the balance as it awaits a decision from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) regarding Israel's involvement.
In solidarity, Slovenia's broadcaster has also threatened to withdraw, alongside Spain, while Iceland's broadcaster is contemplating its stance based on upcoming discussions within the EBU.
RTÉ's statement reflects deep concerns regarding the situation in Gaza, including the killing of journalists and access restrictions for international reporters. This turmoil prompted over 70 former Eurovision contestants to advocate for Israel's exclusion from the contest in their letters to the organizers.
Frank Dermody, Chair of the Irish Eurovision Fan Club, praised RTÉ's decision, citing the need for the competition to remain a platform for peace rather than political discord.
Martin Green, EBU Director, acknowledged the valid concerns regarding geopolitical tensions and stated that an inclusive dialogue with member broadcasters would be essential in navigating the upcoming Eurovision.
Broadcasters must confirm their participation by mid-December, at which point the landscape of the competition will become clearer as countries assess their positions amidst the ongoing conflict.
