In brief

A British man has tragically lost his life while trekking in the remote Himalayan region of northern India. The unfortunate incident occurred as he and a friend were navigating the challenging terrains near Thathri village in Dharamshala. While attempting to hike the popular Triund trek, one of the men suffered a critical injury during their descent. Emergency services reported that local rescue teams were dispatched after the injured trekker’s companion sought help. Despite their efforts, the injured man succumbed to his injuries after nearly 24 hours of rescue efforts.

The unfortunate event unfolded on a Sunday evening when a call was received for assistance from the pair. Local rescue operations were set in motion by the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Response Force, with a team of ten individuals sent to the rugged hills. The trek planned by the two tourists, roughly 7km (4.3 miles) long, is known for its scenic views, but it can become perilous due to its steep and uneven terrain. After a long trek spanning several hours, rescuers found one of the men in a critical state at about 10:30 PM. Securing him to a stretcher proved difficult due to the challenging conditions, which included steep slopes and multiple water crossings. The arduous journey back to safety required two hours to cover a meager 100 meters. As night fell, aid teams requested additional personnel, who arrived the following morning to continue the arduous rescue process. The challenges of the steep landscape necessitated multiple anchor points for the stretcher, further complicating the evacuation. Finally, after enduring extensive obstacles, the victim was transported to the hospital at approximately 5:08 PM on Monday but was declared dead upon arrival. His companion, fortunately, emerged from the ordeal unscathed. Authorities in the Kangra district had previously instituted a temporary ban on trekking in high-altitude zones due to safety concerns, but it appears the two tourists were unaware of this restriction. The deceased’s identity has yet to be released as officials continue their investigations.
