In brief
Mitchell Ring and Jennifer Colin expressed their distress after a woman's body was placed next to them during a Qatar Airways flight, highlighting a lack of support and protocol for such incidents.
An Australian couple described their harrowing experience on a recent Qatar Airways flight, where the body of a deceased passenger was placed next to them, leaving them in shock and distress. Mitchell Ring and Jennifer Colin were en route to Venice when tragedy struck midway through their journey from Melbourne to Doha. A woman collapsed in the aisle and, despite the prompt response from cabin crew, sadly passed away. After the incident, the cabin crew made the controversial decision to move the covered corpse beside Mr. Ring, even though there were other empty seats available. Despite Ms. Colin managing to shift to a different location on the plane, Mr. Ring felt he wasn't offered a similar option. He later expressed his concern over the airline's lack of a proper protocol for managing such traumatic scenarios.“I would have thought that any airline would have a protocol in place to ensure the dignity of all passengers is maintained in situations like these," Mr. Ring stated. He noted that upon landing, passengers were instructed to remain seated while medical personnel arrived, at which point he was confronted with the reality of the deceased woman’s identity. The couple reported they were not offered any support or follow-up care from Qatar Airways or Qantas, the airline they booked through, further intensifying the emotional toll of the experience on them. Ms. Colin poignantly labeled the event as "traumatic", adding that while they empathize with the deceased's family, there should be measures to care for passengers facing a crisis. In response to the incident, Qatar Airways issued a statement extending their condolences to the deceased's family and apologized for any distress caused to the passengers. They are reportedly in the process of reaching out to those onboard, but the couple feels such incidents need to be managed with more compassion and care. A representative from Qantas reiterated that the responsibility for handling onboard emergencies lies with the operating airline, in this case, Qatar Airways. The couple's call for better support measures in flights marks a significant point of discussion regarding passenger care amidst unforeseen tragedies in the air.
