Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has taken decisive action by sacking his deputy, Shahram Dabiri, following a widespread backlash against Dabiri's luxurious cruise trip to Antarctica with his spouse during the Persian New Year celebrations, Nowruz. The president's office condemned the voyage as "unjustifiable and unacceptable," citing the severe economic hardships faced by many Iranians.

Social media erupted with images of Dabiri and his wife smiling in front of the MV Plancius, a vessel en route to the South Pole, generating significant public outrage. In a statement released on Saturday, Pezeshkian emphasized the contrast between Dabiri's actions and the pressing economic realities of the nation, stressing that no government official should engage in lavish travel when the populace is grappling with financial strain.

Despite the trip being personally funded, the president remarked that it was still "indefensible," and such actions contradict the principled simplicity expected of public officials, especially in light of Iran's ongoing economic challenges. The Iranian economy is currently facing immense pressure, exacerbated by Western sanctions attributable to its support for groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, classified as terrorist organizations by the United States and several European nations.

As of October 2024, Iran's unemployment rate stood at 8.4%, while inflation soared to 29.5%, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Pezeshkian's comments reflect a growing discontent among the Iranian public, who perceive an increasing disconnect between government officials and the struggles faced by everyday citizens.

Tourism to Antarctica, traditionally reserved for scientists and adventurers, has seen a boom in popularity lately. However, the MV Plancius trip's initial cost is reported at around $6,685 (£5,187), raising further concerns about public servants indulging in such expenses during a national economic crisis. Many supporters of Pezeshkian urged for Dabiri's removal, underscoring the importance of accountability and sensitivity among government leaders.
