BROADVIEW, Ill. (AP) — Activists in suburban Chicago clashed with authorities on Friday as they protested outside a federal immigration enforcement building, voicing their opposition to recent ICE operations targeting immigrant communities. Around a dozen demonstrators attempted to block vehicles outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility, calling out 'Hands off Chicago' as officers responded with chemical agents to dismantle the protest.

Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, who joined the protest, stated: They want us to be afraid... We’re not going to let that happen, highlighting the escalating tension surrounding immigration policies from the Trump administration.

The Broadview facility has seen increased protests, with activists aiming to deter agents and raise awareness about the treatment of immigrants, particularly following the death of a man involved in a police encounter with ICE. Local leaders reaffirmed their commitment to act as a bulwark against perceived attacks on vulnerable populations.

ICE's renewed focus in Illinois has prompted growing unrest, especially in areas densely populated by Latino residents. Activists have organized various demonstrations, including vigils and rallies, to maintain visibility on immigration issues, indicating an ongoing commitment to protecting immigrant rights amidst a challenging legal landscape.
