The daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma has resigned as an MP following allegations that she tricked 17 men to fight for Russia as mercenaries in Ukraine.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, a member of parliament for the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party, stated in an affidavit that she believed the individuals were going to Russia for lawful training.
The MK party confirmed her resignation, emphasizing her focus on efforts to ensure the safe return of those trapped in Ukraine's war-torn regions.
A family member of one man has voiced their distress, seeking accountability and the safe return of their loved ones, who now face the horrors of war.
One family member recounted desperate messages from those trapped in Ukraine, saying, Things you see in the movies, we're seeing it live. The family feels that Zuma-Sambudla’s resignation is insufficient, emphasizing the need for accountability rather than political maneuvering.
She's merely attempting to save the reputation of her father's political party… Families desire accountability and the return of the men tricked into fighting for Russia, expressed the brother of one of the trapped individuals.
In a voice note, a recruit named Sipho shared that recruitment was handled by two individuals, including Zuma-Sambudla. He stressed that they were misled about their purposes, having been promised non-combat roles.
Zuma-Sambudla, currently under scrutiny, vehemently denies misleading anyone, claiming to also be a victim of deception. She asserts her connection to the recruits was innocent.
MK officials have backed Zuma-Sambudla's resignation, urging support for efforts focused on the welfare of those caught in the conflict.
Ex-President Jacob Zuma, formerly of the ANC, formed MK in 2023, and the party has attempted to shift from its historical context to address contemporary challenges, including their current crisis.
As investigations continue into possible recruitment fraud and human trafficking, the families remain anxious for the return of their loved ones who were drawn into the conflict under false pretenses.
