The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran has confirmed the seizure of a tanker named Talara, which occurred on Friday morning in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The Talara, sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands, was reportedly en route from the United Arab Emirates to Singapore when it was intercepted. The IRGC claimed the vessel was found 'in violation of the law by carrying unauthorized cargo,' although specific details regarding the alleged violation were not disclosed. Preliminary reports suggest that the tanker was carrying high-sulphur gasoil.

This region is significant, as it serves as a critical global shipping corridor for oil and liquefied natural gas. The IRGC has periodically targeted various tankers and cargo ships in and around the Gulf, often citing maritime violations like smuggling.

Maritime security company Ambrey indicated that the Talara had deviated suddenly from its course after being approached by three small boats. In light of this incident, the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet, which oversees naval operations in the region, stated it is 'actively monitoring the situation' and emphasized the right of commercial vessels to navigate without impediments on the open seas.

Communication with the tanker was lost while it was approximately 20 nautical miles off the coast of Sharjah's Khorfakkan port. The UK's Maritime Trade Operations Centre advised vessels to maintain caution and report any suspicious activities.

Disputes over passage in the Strait of Hormuz have often intensified in response to Western sanctions against Iran. The IRGC has threatened to obstruct this key maritime route, through which about 20% of the world's traded oil flows, as retaliation for actions taken against it.

The situation has escalated sharply following recent conflicts between Israel and Iran, particularly during a 12-day period when military exchanges occurred, and tensions heightened dramatically.

This seizure aligns with Iran's history of targeting vessels linked to perceived adversaries. In April 2024, the IRGC captured a commercial ship related to Israel following violent confrontations attributed to regional tensions.
