US President Donald Trump has announced a 'total and complete' blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and exiting Venezuela in a bid to combat activities he labels as terrorism, drug smuggling, and human trafficking linked to the Maduro regime.
In a statement shared on Truth Social, Trump described the Venezuelan government as a foreign terrorist organization and accused it of stealing US assets. He affirmed, “Therefore, today, I am ordering A TOTAL AND COMPLETE BLOCKADE OF ALL SANCTIONED OIL TANKERS going into, and out of, Venezuela.”
This announcement emerged shortly after the US seized an oil tanker off the Venezuelan coast, marking an escalation in US military operations in the region. Trump elaborated that Venezuela is 'completely surrounded by the largest Armada ever assembled in the History of South America,' indicating that this military presence would only increase.
Accusations against Maduro's government include the use of stolen oil to finance terrorism-related activities, alongside widespread drug trafficking and violations of human rights. The Trump administration's efforts against Venezuela have been consistent, continuing under the Biden administration with fresh sanctions imposed recently targeting additional ships believed to be transporting Venezuelan oil.
Venezuela has responded to these actions, denouncing the seizure of the tanker and accusing the US of theft. The Venezuelan government maintains that the US seeks to exploit its rich oil reserves, which are among the largest in the world.
The military build-up in the Caribbean Sea demonstrates the lengths to which the US is willing to go to exert pressure on the Maduro government, indicating that the situation is poised to escalate further.
