China's leader Xi Jinping called Taiwan the most important issue in China-US relations during a phone call with US President Donald Trump. Xi urged Trump to be prudent when supplying weapons to the island, stating that he attaches great importance to ties with Washington and hopes both sides will resolve their differences.
Trump characterized the call as excellent and long and thorough. The discussion followed numerous visits by Western leaders to China, aiming to reset relations with this key global player.
In the phone call, Xi reiterated that Taiwan is considered part of China and stressed that Beijing must safeguard its sovereignty. He warned that the US must tread carefully regarding arms sales to Taiwan, which could escalate tensions in the region.
Despite the complexities, Trump noted positive remarks about his relationship with Xi, expressing mutual respect for ongoing concerns on both sides and the importance of collaboration. He is expected to visit China in April to further discuss trade relations, including potential increases in agricultural exports.
There is high vigilance in the US regarding Taiwan, as it has been a primary ally and arms supplier despite maintaining formal diplomatic ties with Beijing. The ongoing geopolitical dynamics underscore the intricate balance needed in US-China relations concerning Taiwan and other major global issues.
