In brief

An unusual tale of a cat's travel mishap highlights both the importance of careful handling of pets during air travel and the emotional bond between animals and their owners.

In a surprising turn of events, a Maine Coon cat named Mittens found herself on an unexpected journey, soaring through the skies between New Zealand and Australia three times in just 24 hours after she was forgotten in the cargo hold of an aircraft. Mittens was scheduled to travel alongside her owner, Margo Neas, from Christchurch to Melbourne on January 12. However, after Margo waited for three long hours in Melbourne, she was informed that her feline companion had inadvertently been left behind and was already on a return flight to New Zealand.Upon realizing the error, Air New Zealand took swift action, turning on the heating in the cargo hold to ensure Mittens was comfortable during the flight. According to Ms. Neas, ground staff mentioned that they had just discovered the oversight when they reached out to inform her about Mittens' situation. "How can this happen?" she had asked, concerned for her pet’s well-being.Sources suggest that a stowed wheelchair might have obstructed the view of the baggage handler, which contributed to this mishap. Air New Zealand has since acknowledged the distress caused by the incident, offering apologies and promises to cover all related travel expenses. The airline typically doesn’t allow direct bookings for pets on international flights, requiring passengers to use approved pet carrier services. The relief in Ms. Neas’s voice was palpable as she recounted the heartwarming moment of their reunion. "She basically just ran into my arms and just snuggled up in here and just did the biggest cuddles of all time," she expressed, emulating the emotional joy of regaining her beloved pet. During this challenging transition to Australia, Ms. Neas noted, "It was not a great start to our new life in Melbourne because we didn't have the family, we weren't complete."This incident can serve as a poignant reminder of the bonds we share with our pets, emphasizing the need for careful planning and consideration when traveling with animals.
